Author: Johnnyboy

Johnnyboy is a queer recovering alcoholic. For the moment he is also the primary caregiver for his mother, who suffers from age-related cognitive impairment. She is happy as a lark and is surrounded by a crew of sober women which gives him the freedom he needs to get out of town. When he is not at home in Somewheresville, he is searching out the proper path to travel for happiness and joy. He is a photographer who believes in the digital age, but feels that film is still where its at. He has a darkroom and works in it. He is single and is in remarkably great physical condition for all the damage he has submitted his body to. His cardiologist is very happy. Johnnyboy is over the age of 35.

Some news…

Sorry for not blogging in a while. I have been distracted by computer games, school reading, non-threatening family issues and just being lazy.

I have, on the other hand, moved my feet and found myself a volunteer job in Bosnia next summer. By “volunteer” I mean just that: No pay, and I have to find my own lodging, but the spiritual rewards will more than compensate, as they always do. I will be working for a group called the St. Mathew’s Relief Project which is run by an AA friend in the pilgrimage town of Medugorje (Medge-oo-gore-yay), Bosnia-Herzegovina. I will be in charge of the two AA meetings that they have, thus giving my friend a break for a month and also accompany her on her relief work rounds. She is trying to facilitate connections between social workers and the families that need them to allow medical care to be distributed fairly. She is also involved with a project in Great Britain that donates prosthetic limbs to children in Bosnia. Bosnia is the most heavily mined country in the world, mostly anti-personnel mines. Although de-mining has been proceeding since the end of the war in the 1990s, most are discovered through the innocent wanderings and playing of children resulting in horrible and predictable results. I will be there from the end of May until the end of June 2008, god willing.

Mom is older, and the heat does her no good. I have been keeping her at home and running any errands that need running as well as outdoor household tasks. I feel like a parent sometimes, and truly understand the concept that being a parent is a full-time job. Like the above aid scenario, the payoff far exceeds the task.

That’s it for now. We’ll see what the next few days bring…

Relief work beginnings…

25/07/2007 Johnnyboy

I have begun a process which may or may not bring me into the world of relief organizations and volunteerism. I have emailed some folks in the Balkans about connecting with them next spring and helping out. I would love to do it and the idea has always appealed to me.

I am also making a decision to leave my current home group and moving across the border, closer to home. My sponsor thinks it is a good idea, seeing as my contact with the ‘new’ group is more solid that the other. I see and hang out with these other folks a lot and it seems a natural change for me.

The New York State convention last weekend solidified this idea for me. I gleaned the knowledge of a more dedicated and deeper type of service to my home group and staying in the local area where I can be of assistance to others nearer to home. In this light I have discovered that my new group does not have a General Service Representative and I think I am ready to do the job. It’s a small district and I have been to several GSR meetings in the area already. No sweat, as far as I am concerned.

I do have a commitment already in action at the old group, though. I picked up a coffee job last month and still have two months left to go. I would love it if someone were to pick it up for me, but I won’t count on it. No expectations…

Anyway, that’s the buzz these days…
